Gerry Conway

Gerry Conway is an American writer of comic books and screenplays. He is best known for co-creating the Marvel Comics character The Punisher and scripting the death of the original Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy.

Gerry Conway was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1950. He began his career in comics in 1971, writing for Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man. He wrote the first issue of the series, which featured the death of Gwen Stacy, a major character in the Spider-Man universe. He also wrote the first issue of The Punisher, which introduced the character of Frank Castle. In addition to writing for Marvel, Conway wrote for DC Comics, including the Justice League of America and Wonder Woman.

In the 1980s, Conway moved away from writing comics and began working as an editor. He was the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics from 1986 to 1987, and then the editor-in-chief of DC Comics from 1989 to 1991.
